Identity V Is Drowning in Kit Bloat — and the 8th Anniversary Freebies Don't Fix It

I want to start with the part of the video that probably brought you here: yes, the 8th Anniversary log-in is live, and yes, every account can grab 4,888 Fragments, an S-Tier Costume Unlock Card, and 3,888 Inspiration just for opening the event page and the in-game mailbox. That's real, that's free, and if you skip it before May 6 you only have yourself to blame. But the bigger conversation in the original video is the one nobody on the official side seems to want to have — Identity V's roster has gotten too big, too fast, and the kits keep getting more bloated with every Essence drop. I agree with the creator, and I want to lay out why with actual numbers from the current roster.

The Anniversary Reward Drop, Without the Filler

The 8th Anniversary runs March 26 to May 6, 2026, with the main story content unlocking after the April 2 maintenance. There's no catch-up window — miss a daily, lose that day. That's the part the cheerful "everything is free" posts gloss over.

What you can actually walk away with as a pure F2P account, based on the published reward list:

Reward Source Notes
4,888 Fragments Anniversary log-in event Claim from event page, confirm in mailbox
3,888 Inspiration Anniversary log-in event Same flow as above
S-Tier Costume Unlock Card Anniversary log-in event Applies to S-Tier and A-Tier skins released before a 2025 cutoff
Returning Costume Voucher Returning Costume Celebration Worth 2,888 Echoes / 8,000 Fragments
A-Tier Feaster Costume Warm-up event chain Must be claimed before May 6
Carnival Chair A-Tier Furniture Anniversary log-in chain Permanent
Gardener "Lady-in-waiting" Costume + Princess's Mask "Oath of the Betrayers" story (Truth & Inference) Story completion gate
Wu Chang "Rift of Dawn and Dusk" Portrait Frame Anniversary distribution Permanent

Daily missions throw off roughly 120 Echoes worth of currency, weeklies add another 500, and a single ranked first-win nets 50. Stack the entire window plus the bundles (Mega Fragment Package at 1,888 Fragments / 160 Echoes, Super Fragment Package at 6,888 Fragments / 980 Echoes) and a zero-spend account is looking at 5,000 to 5,800 Echoes equivalent — about 15 to 18 pulls.

8th Anniversary reward overview

That's a healthy haul, and it's why the title pitches this as "spring for F2P." But it doesn't address the structural problem the creator spends most of the video on.

The Pacing Problem Nobody on Official Side Will Touch

Look at the back-to-back release calendar. Matador dropped February 5, 2026 in Season 41 Essence 1. Dentist (Finsen) dropped April 23, 2026 in Season 42 Essence 1. That's two new Survivors/Hunters in roughly eleven weeks, on top of a roster that already sits at 49 playable Survivors and 32 playable Hunters.

Aesthetic fatigue commentary on character direction

The studio said in a previous community Q&A that release cadence would slow down. It hasn't. The creator's frustration is fair: by the time you've actually internalized the timing windows on a new Hunter — recovery frames, ability cooldowns, tier-0 vs tier-2 behavior — the next one is already in PTR. There's a finite amount of muscle memory most players have to spend, and the schedule is burning through it faster than it's being absorbed.

The aesthetic side of the complaint also lands. Identity V launched as a horror game, and the visual direction since the early seasons has drifted toward what the creator bluntly calls "industrially produced pretty characters." Compare the body language and silhouette of an old Hunter like Geisha to recent ones and the contrast is real — gothic dollhouse versus mobile-RPG splash art.

Why Old Containment Survivors Felt Different

The creator picks Magician and Perfumer as the archetype example, and the kits back him up. These were built as pure containment — they distract a Hunter, they don't multitask.

Magician's whole loop is the Decoy:

  • Starts every match with 3 Decoys, 10-second cooldown each
  • Drops a stationary clone, becomes invisible for 2 seconds
  • Gets a 50% movement speed boost on activation
  • If the Hunter strikes the decoy, the Hunter's location is exposed to all Survivors for 15 seconds, and Magician gets the speed boost a second time
  • Hitting the decoy wastes the Hunter's attack (no recovery state, but they're outlined in white)
  • After a recent buff, post-Decoy frames let Magician (and nearby teammates) instantly vault pallets/windows or rescue from a Rocket Chair
  • "Real or Fake" auto-leaves a decoy on the chair when he's rescued, once per match

Perfumer is the same philosophy in different clothes — three Euphoria sprays per match, each one drops a timestamp she can teleport back to, and the January 29, 2026 hotfix bumped her post-Euphoria damage reduction from 2.5 s to 3.3 s and shortened the dissipation visual.

That's the whole kit. Read the descriptions — there is nothing in there about decoding speed, nothing about hunter slows, nothing about teammate buffs. They exist to eat Hunter time on chase and that's it. The 20% calibration-chance reduction and 20% scope-of-success expansion on Magician's Dexterous trait is genuinely the only "support" thing he does, and it's a passive he never thinks about.

What "Modern" Containment Actually Looks Like

Now compare that to Matador, the Season 41 release. The creator specifically calls Matador out as a kit that's no longer "purely" containment, and the data sheet makes the case for him:

Mechanic Effect
Base speed 3.8 m/s, +10% interaction speed
Muleta Mastery (active dash) 6 m initial + 10 m extension = 16 m total
Cleave radius 2.5 m, 0.6 s window
Hunter slow on cleave 50% (4.6 → 2.3 m/s) for 2.5 s
Charges 2 max, 11 s cooldown, 70 s duration
Gaonera Pass 8 s zone at 25 m range, –10% Hunter interaction speed
Courage gen 40 per cleave hit, 2/s within 16 m of Hunter, 1/s in Terror Radius
Faena passive aura 6 m radius, –10% Hunter MS / +10% Survivor vault speed

That's a containment Survivor with a hard slow, an area-denial cooldown, a passive aura that buffs teammates, and a 6 m damage-immunity dash on the March 2026 rework. Same tag as Magician. Different planet.

Archer is the cleanest example of the trend: "Contain" on the role label, but the kit reads like a chase Hunter's worst nightmare — 6 m dash with 0.6 s damage immunity, a hit during or after the dash applies a 10 m knockback plus the same 50% slow for 2.5 seconds. S-tier in Season 36 and the dash-knockback-slow loop is why. Knight predicts up to two Hunter actions within 13 m over the next 8 seconds. Meteorologist hands one teammate up to 7 Composure per second and halves their Fear at 100 stacks. None of these read like "I distract, you decode."

The Hunter Side of the Same Disease

The creator's other example is Geisha — "a pure chase Hunter" from the early seasons. Her external trait set really is that focused: Triple Phases (Beauty / Prajna / Panic), Dancing in Misery places butterflies as 40-second targets within 30 m, Dash Hit terrain to a visible butterfly, Soul Departure extends the placement range. Slow demolition, soft control, no babysitting tools.

The November 20, 2025 buffs (normal attack range to 2.95 m, charged to 3.21 m, miss recovery down to 0.66 s, hit recovery down to 0.95 s) pushed her from B-tier to A-tier (current rating 33/35) without changing her identity. She's still the same character: predict where Survivors are running, plant a butterfly, dash through walls, eat the recovery.

Compare what the January 29, 2026 hotfix had to do for newer Hunters just to keep them tuned:

Hunter Adjustment
Lanternist Freeze-frame 10 s → 9 s
Soul Weaver Window vault 2.81 → 2.31 s; Spinning/Web cooldown 10 → 8 s; 2-stack Entangled MS penalty 5% → 8%
The Feaster Pallet break 2.87 → 2.57 s; Tentacle MS penalty 10% → 6%
Night Watch Tier-I Windwalk-Charge obstacle logic; Tier-0 Tempest +10% attraction distance
"Hullabaloo" Double Surprise cooldown 18 → 16 s
The Shadow Corrupted Ostracon capped at 60 s post-elimination; indestructible 9 → 6 s
"Cueist" Closed Domain rollback 15% → 12%; Cue Ball transfer 3 → 1.8 s

That's seven Hunters in one patch, all of them sitting on multi-system kits that need recovery frames and cooldowns retuned every couple months. Geisha's patch line for the same period reads like normal balance work. The newer ones read like firefighting.

The Costume and Old-Model Question

The creator's other point is that the development time spent on cranking out new "pretty character" releases could be going into old-model refresh. There's actually evidence the team can do this work — the model optimization pass listed for Prisoner's Osamu Dazai (more hair volume, brightness adjustment, refined facial proportions), Seer's White (smaller head, better proportions, refined hair), Doctor's Blossom of Rebirth (defined facial structure, makeup, hair detail), and Priestess's Jinghong (more hair volume, makeup features, skin shading depth) shows the pipeline exists.

The complaint is that this kind of work shows up sporadically while new Essence drops are on a fixed cadence. "Make existing things better" is the one item the community town halls (the creator calls them "Wo Tan Hui") seem to never prioritize, even though it's the one improvement that benefits every player who already owns those skins.

Concrete Things to Do This Anniversary Window

If you're treating this purely as a free-loot run, here's the order I'd actually do things in:

  • Open the event page today and confirm the 4,888 Fragments + S-Tier Unlock Card + 3,888 Inspiration claim — check the mailbox to verify
  • Knock out the warm-up events before May 6 to lock in the A-Tier Feaster Costume (it's gated by the warm-up window, not the main anniversary)
  • Run the "Visitor From Beyond" Investigation daily between March 26 and April 22 for Clues, Fragments, and Spyglasses
  • Finish the "Oath of the Betrayers" Truth & Inference story for the Princess's Mask Accessory and Gardener "Lady-in-waiting" Costume
  • Use the Returning Costume Voucher on a pre-September 2025 limited Fragment costume (S or A rarity, non-crossover) — the 50% Off Cards ×2 and Echoes Discount Coupons ×3 stack on top
  • Try the April Fool's Day mode (size-changing Survivors/Hunters, escaping Cipher Machines and Rocket Chairs, Mimic Chests) for the seasonal vibes
  • Hit the Character Days April 2–5 if you've previously played Orpheus (Novelist/Nightmare), Grace (Naiad), or Qi Shiyi (Antiquarian) — there are new rewards for returning participants

A redeem-code reminder: every code circulating in old guides — SD5YSY1X, queenbee1127, idv7thyear, FRIE25IDV, IDVLFHAPPY, IDV1ZHYRED, id5thanniv, idvmoonlit, IDVLF2GIFT, IDVHOLiC, idvanniv5, IDVAOD2023, idv1mthx, idvver2upd — is expired. Don't waste five minutes copy-pasting them into the redemption page like I did. There are no active codes right now.

Anniversary claim confirmation interface

The free stuff is great. The kit-bloat problem is real. Both can be true at the same time, and the creator is right to be annoyed that the studio keeps choosing "ship the next character" over "fix what's already here."
